In the spring of 2012, six University of Washington students set out to put on the first ever Out of the Darkness Walk at UW. Proceeds from this walk went directly to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). With a goal of just $5,000, the students were pleasantly surprised when they raised over $12,000 for this very important cause. They weren’t ready to settle after this wonderful achievement. So in the fall quarter of 2012, HSPA was founded.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students. In HSPA, we have a strong belief that it is our job (as a community) to support these individuals who are struggling. We hope to do this by decreasing stigma, and by creating a safe environment where students feel comfortable talking about such taboo subjects.
Our hope is that by opening up the door to such uncomfortable conversations, those struggling with depression and suicide can recognize that they are not alone. College is not easy, but we are here to support each other. We hope you consider joining HSPA as we work towards our goal of changing this statistic. We believe every life is precious, every life has a purpose.
